Taizé

During the gathering in Havana in 2014, the Bishop of Matanzas, Mgr Manuel Hilario, insisted that we also come to Matanzas for a time of prayer. Brother Alois and several other brothers accepted his invitation. The meeting was held at the Pastoral Center of the diocese in Milagrosa, Matanzas, with young people from the Diocese of Matanzas and from the First Baptist Church of Matanzas taking part.

On that occasion Bishop Manuel Hilario asked the Taizé Community to open a fraternity in his diocese, and the community agreed. In 2015 one brother travelled to Matanzas to explore possible places to live. Toward the end of that year two brothers returned, and Colón was chosen as the location.

In February 2016 two brothers went to Colón, in the Diocese of Matanzas, to begin the Cuban fraternity. Their house is in the building set aside for retreats and spiritual exercises.

The life of the fraternity is structured around three common prayers each day, often shared with others and sometimes woven into the retreats taking place.

We also take part in many parish activities where we live: helping to distribute meals to those in need, providing catechesis for adults seeking baptism, leading Eucharistic adoration every Thursday morning, supporting the parish youth group, running a mission house in a nearby village, and organizing a monthly prayer at the Cathedral of Matanzas.

Recently we led a day-long youth meeting in Havana and a three-day gathering for young people from the diocese, joined by youth from the First Baptist Church of Matanzas, in the centre where we live.
